In February 1965, under the leadership of Rev.
Glen McGriff, the Union Grove Baptist Church voted to sponsor a mission
in Hazel Green, Alabama.
The first meetings were held in the "little pink
house" formerly next to Hazel Green School rented from Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy
Tate.
As the church grew, the worship services were
moved to the old post office building at the southeast corner of Joe Quick
Road and Highway 231.
The church later bought property and built the
present facilities on Hunt Drive.
There were ten brave people from the Union Grove
Church who took the challenge and task of forming the mission. The first
services were held on Easter Sunday 1965 with Brother Glenn McGriff preaching.
Brother McGriff continued preaching both at the mission and Union Grove
until a mission pastor, Rev. Tom Upshaw, was called in March of 1966.
The mission was organized as the Hazel Green Baptist
Church on September 18, 1966 with fifty-three members and sixty-three enrolled
in Sunday School. Rev. Tom Upshaw was the first pastor.
In April of 1986 the name of the church was officially
changed to the First Baptist Church of Hazel Green. In the past ten years
the church has continued to grow, with the expansion of the original sanctuary,
addition of a fellowship hall, a new education wing, and now, our new worship
center is complete.
